In this Liquid Web review I will take a more in-depth look into their HIPAA compliant hosting solution. I will go through their product offering, and their included services and level of support. And I will make a sample price calculation for a typical server offering. I also sent Liquid Web a couple of questions to get to know them and their solutions even better, and you will find their answers in this Liquid Web review.

HIPAA Compliant Hosting Setup

You can build your own HIPAA compliant hosting setup with Liquid Web from just one server. You can choose to use their pre-configured setup or build/modify your own. Their entry setup gives you enough power to run a small to medium sized website or service. They offer a combination of SATA and SSD (hot swap) drives to give you both performance and reliability. It comes with 8 GB memory (which is a lot in this market), and upgrading to even more memory is very inexpensive. Same goes for an optional processor upgrade, their prices are very competitive. And it comes in a locked cabinet, which is one of the HIPAA compliance requirements. Their solution comes fully managed with their Heroic Support.

Included services and level of support

Along with above server configuration comes their  backup product Guardian, which allows you to make encrypted backups off-site (a very important HIPAA requirement) .
Liquid Web runs a data center which is fully equipped to make sure you get HIPAA certified when it comes to facilities and security. They work with you to make sure you become HIPAA compliant (read more about this in the interview below). And their staff knows how to make sure you keep your HIPAA certification. They are able to provide a Business Associate Agreement (BAA) upon request.

Sample price calculation

When you visit the Liquid Web HIPAA solutions page you will find the pre-configured setups I mentioned before. The single server Linux configuration starts at $724 per month, which is really competitive. The Windows based version costs an extra $80 a month. And great thing is, this is enough to get started with. This includes anything that is needed to become HIPAA compliant.
If you need extra performance, you might want to choose the multi server setup, which starts at $1.568 per month for Linux, with Windows actually being $115 per month cheaper.
And remember, when you signup using our special discount link, the first month is on Liquid Web.

Liquid Web offers a very competitive HIPAA compliant hosting solution. Their entry configuration has the lowest price and best performance you can get in this market, while still being able to get you HIPAA certified.

Liquid Web Interview  – 4 Questions to get to know them better

1) Why should people choose Liquid Web for their HIPAA compliant hosting solution?

The role we play in certifying a server to be HIPAA compliant is simple: we provide hardware and infrastructure / network security. Our SSAE-16 Compliance information is the documentation of our data center, along with the security and redundancy features it has to meet the regulations needed for HIPAA.

HIPAA requires a locked cabinet, dedicated hardware firewall, hot swappable hard drives and encrypted offsite backups. It is required that a HIPAA solution have remote encrypted backups as well, which is what our Guardian product provides.

Fully managed and core managed servers will receive the benefit of our fully trained staff on-site 24/7 to handle any hardware, network, infrastructure, or server management needs.

2) On your site you state that you have HIPAA trained staff on-site 24/7/365. Can you give some example of how this will benefit a customer?

Having the facility manned 24×7 is part of our physical security. There will be staff here at all times who are qualified to access your server to fix any issues that arise with the hardware, core systems, network, etc. The staff knows how to maintain the security of the HIPAA server while working on the issues.

3) To what extent can you help a customer become HIPAA certified?

The server is not fully HIPAA Compliant until it is cleared by a HIPAA Compliance Auditor. The customer will need to hire a third party auditor to review and audit the server to make sure it meets all requirements.

Why do they need an auditor? There are numerous factors at the application level that have to meet federal regulations. There are certain levels of encryption that will have to be placed at the database and also with in direct data storage of the hard drive. All software used must also be updated to the most recent stable released version and have every security update/patch released installed/applied. There are also plugins and themes for some applications that cannot be used.

All of these factors on the application level are where the auditor will tell the customer what needs to be addressed. The auditor may/will require the SSAE-16 documentation in order to fulfill their audit to pass the customer server.

We can also provide a BAA (Business Associate Agreement) to cover our portion of the HIPAA compliance (Liquid Web HIPAA BAA)

4) How does the sales process work?

  • What happens after a customer has signed up with one of your preconfigured configurations?
Within 30 minutes, the customer will get a verification phone call from the Sales team. The Sales team member will verify the information on the new account and order, and then they will send it to the Setups team.
  • How long does it take before a customer can have its HIPAA solution up and running?
On average it takes about 48 hours for the server to be built and ready to go live. The Setups team will work closely with the customer regarding configuration of that server.
